SHOCKING for the PARENTS: 10 pupils DEAD in dormitory FIRE - KENYA

Thursday 22nd August 2012 - More than ten pupils of Asumbi Boarding Primary School, in Homa County, are feared dead following a fire that broke out in their dormitory yester-night.

At a time when the Ministry of Education had banned holiday tuition, our sources indicate that the ten were among class seven and eight pupils attending August holiday tuition in the school which is run by the Asumbi Catholic Church parish.

According to witnesses, the fire is said to have been caused by an electric fault sparked by frequent power shortages in the area. Witnesses also pointed out that the pupils had tried to escape only to find that the doors were locked from the outside.

The school's administration was put on pressure to account for the incident when parents whose children were at the school began streaming at the institution as soon as word on the fire went out.

It took the Police and Kenya Red Cross long hours to quell the angry parents yearning for the blood of the school's administrators and the Catholic nuns who run the school. However they were able to give an official statement later in the night.

Rangwe DO Daniel Cheruiot, who spoke at the scene, said he counted at least eight charred remains of girls.

Homa Bay OCPD Francis Kumut added that about ten girls were feared dead in the fire.
